Image : How do Voice over IP audio conferences work ?

How do Voice over IP audio conferences work ?

2006-08-11 14:36:43
by VoIP Providers List

Audio conferencing using Voice over IP (VoIP) works very similarly to a traditional conference call using analog telephones.

In a conference call, callers connect to a conference bridge, a server that allows multiple people to talk to one another. VoIP audio conferences use the same principle - callers connect to a conference bridge via their telephones or computers.

The main difference involves how he data moves from one point to another. Traditional telephones use circuit switching. For circuit-switched conferencing, the telephone system routes calls through a series of interconnected switches until it reaches the conference bridge. The conference bridge then connects multiple calls to one another. If all of the callers are located in the same office building, their calls connect to the bridge through the private branch exchange (PBX), which is a miniature phone network within the office. Either way, all the connections stay open as long as the call continues. Usually, only one person talks at a time, so only parts of the connection are actually in use at any given time.

VoIP networks do not use circuit switching. Instead, they use packet
switching. While circuit switching keeps the connection open and constant, packet switching opens a brief connection - just long enough to send a small chunk of data, called a packet, from one system to another. Instead of traveling from switch to switch, the data travels across the Internet, usually following the most efficient path. Conference calling capabilities are often built into VoIP networks or available as a service upgrade. If a business uses a VoIP network for its telephones, calls from outside of the company can still typically connect the conference bridges. External lines may connect directly to the bridge server, or external calls may reach the server through the VoIP network.

by John FONTANA

Microsoft last week lined up additional back-end partners it will need to support its real-time collaboration platform and VoIP client. The company plans to give corporate users a full range of voice communication features through software that supports integration between any PC-based device or service and traditional cell or wireline phones.

The partnerships, including those with Cisco and a number of telco partners, focus on support for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE), and the integration of traditional phone systems and the PC.

At the annual VoiceCon show Microsoft said Alcatel, Avaya, Cisco, Mitel, NEC, Nortel and Siemens will integrate call-control capabilities with Microsoft's Live Communications Server (LCS), Office Communicator 2005 desktop client and Office Communicator Mobile.

MSN Live Messenger soon available

2006-04-04 12:31:58

Uniden America Corporation, a leading manufacturer of wireless consumer electronics, and Microsoft Corp. today announced an alliance in North America to deliver a digital cordless phone that serves as a traditional landline phone and takes calling to the next level by also enabling customers to make and receive Internet calls via the upcoming Windows Live(TM) Messenger phone.

The WIN 1200, a 5.8GHz digital cordless phone, integrates Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony with a landline, enabling consumers to experience next-generation technology throughout the home while providing an easy-to-use and convenient way to stay connected. With the WIN 1200, customers will have three calling choices with the solution: Windows Live Messenger free PC-to-PC calling allowing users to place and receive voice calls; MCI Web Calling offering Windows Live Messenger users a low-cost PC-to-phone outbound calling option; and traditional landline phone service(a).

As a hardware extension to the Windows Live Messenger service, the WIN 1200 displays the Messenger contact list allowing customers to see their friends’ online status and Messenger icon when logged into the service from virtually anywhere in the house and place calls to those contacts. This ability to notify a Windows Live Messenger user when another user is connected to the network and capable of receiving communication through the Messenger interface is known as presence technology. The WIN 1200 now extends the reach of presence technology by delivering notification options on the cordless handset, which can be used throughout the home or office, and eliminates the need for consumers to remain attached to their computer for communication.

Image : Skype explains how secured it is

Skype explains how secured it is

2006-01-13 15:50:30

Skype, one of the most downloaded and used VoIP softphone, had to face recent problems with security.
According to the "products" page from the Skype corporate site, there are no threats with the lastest version anymore...

When it comes to talking, instant messaging or transferring files, we’ve gone to great lengths to make it secure. Skype automatically encrypts everything before sending it through the internet. Likewise, on arrival everything is decrypted on-the-spot and presented as crystal clear speak, text or a file transfer nobody can intercept.

Yes, you heard it right.
All the security in the world wouldn’t matter, though, if you couldn’t hear the other person. With Skype, you can. We’re working with the very best in the industry to provide a sound quality far superior to what you’re used to from ordinary telephones. If you will bear with us for a moment here we’d like to share some technical stuff with you: with normal telephones you can only hear sounds from 300 Hz to 3 kHz. Not so with Skype; We’re all over the spectrum, from the lowest hum to the highest screetch. In other words: ‘F’ and ‘S’ will sound like the two different letters they were meant to, and in the end you will be able to have a much more natural conversation.

Getting the words out.
That also goes for conferences. It’s completely secure for you and up to four others to get together to coordinate tactics in a game, make one of those important business decisions or simply have a chat, even if you’re all on different continents.

Image : VoIP could bring new security threats

VoIP could bring new security threats

2006-01-13 15:22:01

As they adopt Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), companies should beware that the technology will draw more attention from hackers, spammers and other threats. Industry experts said investing in VoIP today could be opening the door for trouble tomorrow -- unless users are prepared.

VoIP technology allows users to route voice calls through the Internet. This can reduce costs by eliminating toll charges, among other possible benefits. But ripping out an existing phone system and replacing it with VoIP ties the phone system into the data network, exposing the phones to the same kinds of security risks as the data network. The spamming, phishing and denial-of-service attacks that keep network administrators tossing and turning in bed at night could also affect VoIP phones.

Without a large IT staff and backup systems of larger companies, SMBs might be at even more risk.

Image : SIP Firewall

SIP Firewall

2006-01-13 14:46:23

Is there a difference between a regular internet connection firewall and a SIP firewall ?

The very purpose of a firewall, to stop attacks from the Internet, also stops new applications, such as IP Telephony, from working. Specifically, all protocols or applications initiating access from the Internet to a device on a private LAN are a challenge. SIP is the protocol of the future for such applications and real-time communication is the future for the Internet. The IX66 SIP capable firewalls all include an access router enabling several PCs and other devices to share a single broadband connection and a firewall for privacy and security. The firewall has the unique feature of handling IP telephony and other applications conforming to the SIP standard.

The Intertex product range is evolving all the time. Features like VPN termination, FXO ports for connecting directly to the traditional telephone line and FXS ports for connecting traditional telephones are features that recently have been made available. What separates the Intertex products from most competitiors is that we actually make SIP communication available to all devices on the LAN, whether they are softclients, SIP phones or ATA-boxes.

PGP inventor to encrypt VoIP calls

2006-01-12 16:01:11

The creator of a well-known tool for keeping email safe from prying eyes is now working on a program that he says will help stop eavesdroppers from listening in on Internet-based phone calls.

Phil Zimmermann, who created the Pretty Good Privacy program for encrypting email, plans to demonstrate a prototype of his Voice over Internet Protocol security program on Thursday (Friday AEST) during the Black Hat Briefings security conference in Las Vegas.

Most internet-based phone calls are sent unscrambled, meaning it's possible for anyone to intercept the traffic and eavesdrop. Zimmermann's application scrambles the data until it reaches its destination. The recipient must be running a program using the same protocols.

Image : Say hello to the Skype trojan

Say hello to the Skype trojan

2006-01-12 15:47:40
by John Leyden

Virus writers are targeting Skype users with a new Trojan that poses as the latest version of the popular VoIP software.

Net security firm MessageLabs has detected and blocked more than 800 copies of a new variant of the MyTob (AKA Fanbot) Trojan, which is being distributed by email. References and nicknames contained in the code lead MessageLabs to conclude that the malware was probably created by a well known Chinese black hat hacker and not the original author of the malware strain.

Maksym Schipka, a senior antivirus researcher at MessageLabs, said the malware is the first he's aware of that mentions Skype and as such represents a new theme for social engineering attacks.

The malware arrives in an attachment in messages posing as the latest (v1.4) release of Skype. Legitimate downloads of the software only came out last week, so the attack is timely. If users open the infected payload on a vulnerable Windows machine they will find their PCs transformed into zombie clients (theoretically at least) under the control of computer hackers.

Schipka said that compromised machines fail to connect to IRC servers so they are not much use to the bad guys, right now. He added that the release of a variant of MyTob by someone other than the original author showed the source code was available in at least "some circles" of the computer underground. ®

How Can SIP Compete with Skype? The Best of Both Worlds:

2006-01-06 10:34:16
by Jeff Pulver

Skype is without doubt the most successful VoIP download in the history of the Internet and Skype has established themselves as the biggest VoIP service provider on a global scale. Skype has the fastest adoption rate ever recorded. We have to ask ourselves why Skype is working so well.

So I have discussed with Henry if and how the SIP community can leverage SIP to make the best of both worlds into something that is greater than the sum of both. This would imply using SIP in both client-server and peer-to-peer mode, using the IETF standards for NAT traversal, auditable security, providing equal or better than PSTN sound quality, presence, IM and last but not least providing the ultimate user experience overall.

Thailand opens VoIP market, Internet gateways

2006-01-04 17:51:03

Thailand`s National Telecommunications Commission has issued a ruling allowing ISPs to offer VoIP services without getting a new license, The Nation reports.

The report also said the NTC has allowed the opening up of the local and international Internet exchange gateways.

The VoIP system enables operators to provide voice services via the IP network, while the domestic Internet exchange is for the local ISPs to directly "exchange" domestic traffic.

The international Internet gateway is for ISPs to connect to global networks. Under the NTC`s policy, ISPs can immediately provide the VoIP service without the need to apply for a separate license.

The NTC however will charge an entry fee for either the domestic or Internet gateway license, while exchange operators have to pay 3% of annual revenue as a license fees.

CAT Telecom and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre are currently the only domestic Internet exchange operators.

Voice Spam Begins

2006-01-04 17:49:11

The popularity of Skype and VoIP will lead to new forms of spam attacks next year, security experts predict. As VoIP applications become more widely used, there will be a rise in voice spam.

That’s because VoIP services lack strong encryption and they can become a target of scammers, said Information Risk Management, an independent security consultancy firm.

“Just as web users can be plagued by pop-up advertisements and spam email, it is expected that VoIP services will be the next target,” said the company in a report. “Users could find calls redirected or hijacked by advertisements.”

Though there are some security solutions for VoIP traffic and equipment, service providers will have to move in faster to nip the problem in its early stages.

Image : Yahoo Messenger is not VoIP

Yahoo Messenger is not VoIP

2006-01-04 17:46:04
by Tom Keating

Jeremy blogged about the Yahoo Messenger announcement and he complained that Ryan Naraine over at eWEEK miscategorized Yahoo Messenger as having VoIP capabilities when Yahoo Messenger can merely do PC-to-PC calling. He preferred the term VoIM (voice over instant message) instead of VoIP. While Yahoo Messenger technically is doing voice over IP (VoIP) packetization it is limted to buddy-to-buddy calling (doesn't do PSTN calling) and that's what stuck in Jeremy's craw. I have to admit, I thought the same thing when reading the Yahoo Messenger news this morning. All the "important" VoIP news these days is about broadband VoIP and Skype - both of which can dial the PSTN. If you can't reach the PSTN using VoIP then you are an "also ran". Many "novice" VoIP fans will assume when they read that Yahoo Messenger has VoIP that it can do the same thing a Vonage or a Skype can. They would be wrong. The new Yahoo Messenger does do PC-to-PC calling and its full-duplex (prior version was not I believe)- BIG WHOOP!. I actually had intented to blog similar thoughts to Jeremy's this morning. Ah well, 11:45pm is better than never, right?

Suddenly everyone wants to offer you cheap calls.

BT has announced plans to undercut Skype prices on its own VoIP service, and will launch a new service in February combining its two existing VoIP offerings.

The telecoms giant claimed that it will undercut Skype on 50 of the most popular international calling destinations.

The move would mark a distinctly higher profile for BT's VoIP services despite concerns from analysts that it will undercut its fixed line business.

Skype International SA has commercially launched beta versions of two new premium services, with two more in the pipeline, as the Internet telephone company moves to generate revenue from voice over Internet Protocol technology.

"We now offer customers the opportunity to purchase phone numbers so they can be reached by non-Skype users with ordinary fixed or mobile phones, and to sign up for a voicemail service," said Skype spokeswoman Kat James on Monday. "We are also planning a video conferencing service and another tailored for small and medium-size businesses in the near future. Adding new premium services to our free Skype-to-Skype offer is something we've planned from the start."

VoIP in the public sector

2005-11-30 17:18:46

Within five to 10 years, analysts predict that traditional voice telecommunications will be a thing of the past.

Increasingly, voice calls are already being carried using internet technologies on the same networks that is already carrying information published on the web and sent by email. For public sector organisations, there are many potential benefits. Cost savings, productivity gains, and specialist new services such as teleconferencing are all there to be exploited. Many European local councils and central government bodies have already made the switch.

Now E-Government Bulletin, the UK's leading publication in the e-government sector, is hosting a seminar for all public sector bodies and their private sector partners who are keen to find out more and understand how they can exploit the new VoIP technologies to the full.

Though Skype has proved quite popular - with more than 50 million registered users - scepticism persists over whether the voice over IP application is safe for businesses.

Here is a selection of 3 articles about Skype banning:

------------------------

Skype could pose security problems for companies, analysts say

The growing popularity of Skype Technologies SA's free Internet telephony software could soon pose the same kind of security challenges for companies that other peer-to-peer (P2P) software technologies have created in recent years, according to security experts.
The warning comes after the disclosure this week of two critical flaws in Skype's software, one of which could allow malicious hackers to take complete control of compromised systems.

One of the flaws is a buffer overflow error in Skype's user client for Windows that could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on compromised systems, according to a statement from the company. The other vulnerability is a heap overflow flaw in a networking routine affecting Skype clients for all platforms. That flaw could crash the client software.

What differences between the U.S and the European VoIP markets ?

2005-11-23 19:32:35

Here is a possible answer, by Richard Statsny.

There is a basic difference between USA and Europe.
The first exists, the second exists only on the paper.
In the first we have 300 millions Americans speaking the same language.
In the second we have 450 millions of "French, Germans, Italians, Uks and so on..." speaking different languages.
In the first the FULL POPULATION has the need to call long distance (California to New York).
In the second, just few companies have the need to call long distance and those few are managed mostly by OLD people, OLD THINKING and BEHAVING people who see the new TECHNOLOGIES as something scaring and damaging.
And indeed damaging they are.
Europe is the OLD WORLD, still shaped in the "Mafia Fashion" where few families (Monopolies) control the economy because they control the Politics.
And this "Mafia" survives and guaranties to all "associates" the right profits.

Why should they embrace "Disruptive Technologies" and change the Status Quo?
The Mafia survives thanks to the fact that there is no fight among the "families" and the profits are equally distributed among all.
The eventual fight is on the "how much" but not the "who".

If they made a referendum through Europe right now, I think ALL would vote NO, but not because they do not believe in Europe, THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN THIS EUROPE.

And as long as they will be able to keep the "Status Quo" there won't be any space for VoIP, for Progress and for innovation.

And we REALLY SHOULDN'T BLAME CHINA FOR THAT.

"Chi e' fonte dei suoi mal pianga se stesso".

The only ones to blame would be ourselves.

4.8 million VoIP users in 2004. How many in 2010 ?

2005-11-23 18:21:35

As the number of VoIP users soars, the market income of VoIP equipment will triple from 2004 to 2010, iSuppli predicted.

By the year 2010, the global number of civilian VoIP users will reach 197.2 million, about 40 times that of the 4.8 million in 2004. By 2010, income in wire VoIP equipment will reach 24.5 billion dollars, three times more than the 8.04 billion dollars in 2004. VoIP Security Alliance Delivers VoIP Security Framework

2005-11-21 18:24:26

The Voice over IP Security Alliance (VOIPSA), www.voipsa.org, today released the first comprehensive description of security and threats in the field of Voice over IP (VoIP). The results, known as the VoIP Security Threat Taxonomy, provide the industry with a clear view of VoIP threats, the vulnerabilities and a context for balancing trade-offs.

"The importance of this accomplishment is that it gives a foundation to all future discussions on VoIP security that are both technically and socially informed. Until now, the public has been uncertain about the various threats, how risks related to each other and technical trade-offs. This is fundamental to all future work in the field." said Jonathan Zar, Secretary and Outreach Chair for VOIPSA, head of the taxonomy project and Senior Director for SonicWALL.

The project, launched in late March, is the first completed project of VOIPSA, an organization formed in February with the purpose of improving the public awareness of issues and best practices for securing Voice over IP. VOIPSA invites participation in the new project in the form of comments, feedback and discussion. Live portions of the VoIP Security Threat Taxonomy are now available for discussion by registering through links posted at: http://www.voipsa.org/Activities/

Major elements of the work include the following:

• Core definitions that give specific meaning to privacy and security
• A framework that effectively connects public policy and technology issues
• Recognition of the human element in threats as distinct from their technical means
• Specific sets of issues for consideration by legislative bodies and by law enforcement
• A detailed structure for technical vulnerabilities across the value chain

"While technical work on the taxonomy will continue, the results published today provide an effective framework with which to inform the press, the policy community and other projects within VOIPSA including: User Requirements, Best Practices and Testing," added Mr. Zar.

David Endler, Chairman of VOIPSA and Director of Security Research for 3Com's TippingPoint division, said "Since VOIPSA's launch earlier this year, we've come a long way in gaining support throughout the VoIP and security industries. This first project puts security in context, and gives unique clarity to the challenges ahead. The Taxonomy Project is a significant accomplishment and will help shape the future work of VOIPSA and the industry. We expect to deliver the results of our next project, a list of security requirements, by the end of the year."
